Iran In Brief

U.S. Interests Section scuttled, for now

October 5, 2008

The AP is reporting that the Bush administration “has shelved plans to set up a diplomatic outpost in Iran, in part over fears it could affect the U.S. presidential race or be interpreted as political meddling.”  This is disappointing on a number of levels, most because it takes the Bush Administration off the high-road it appeared to taking (or at least trying to) with Iran in the run-up to the transition.  It’s hard to see what the downside to the interest-section initiative would be, not to mention the compelling visuals in long lines of Iranians seeking U.S. visas.
