ISIS takes a close look at the various questions regarding Iran’s IR 40 heavy water reactor at Arak which has been under construction since June 2004.
The reactor’s operation and potential to produce significant amounts of weapons-grade plutonium are years away but the timeline is narrowing and several outstanding questions and issues remain.
Among the uncertainties are the status of the reactor’s construction and associated hot cells that could be capable of separating plutonium, the puzzle regarding the 40 megawatt-thermal heavy water reactor’s fuel assembly that was recently presented by President Ahmadinejad at the Esfahan Fuel Manufacturing Plant, and finally, the continued denial of the IAEA’s ability to scrutinize the Arak reactor, a step that the IAEA has said is inconsistent with Iran’s safeguards obligations.
