Ahmadinejad addresses UN General Assembly

September 23, 2008

I of course was watching through the narrow lens of Iran’s nuclear program and listening for what, if anything President Ahmadinejad would have to say about his centrifuges.  Iran scholars are better at parsing his lengthy introduction, which sounded rather like a didactic sermon with a lot of demanding “obeisance” to God.  The Israel bashing was especially heavy– conjuring images of Jews as “a deceitful people” pulling the strings of the world’s financial system.  Ugh.  Is there no one in Iran’s foreign ministry with the courage to say that such statements are both sickeningly false and beneath the dignity of a head of state as great as Iran speaking before the United Nations?  Back to the nuclear issue:  A. relented not an inch.  He acknowledged that dialogue was fine but insisted that Iran would not be deterred from its legal path.  Needless to say this does not suggest a diplomatic outcome is likely over the near term.  I predict a continued holding pattern until the outcome of the November election is known.  Webcast of UNGA addresses can be found here.  (JWS)
