Ali Akbar Salehi was appointed yesterday by President Ahmadinejad the new chief of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.  Salehi served previously as Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA in Vienna and reportedly has a PhD from MIT.  On the face of it, Iran’s nuclear program is in the hands of an experienced technocrat, and certainly someone familiar with the multilateral diplomacy that has surrounded the issue.  Our sense is that Salehi’s appointment signals a continuation of the status quo with the nuclear program.
