ISIS Iran Report

Clinton says Iran has a choice

April 24, 2009

On Wednesday, Secretary of Sate Hillary Clinton testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee and suggested that while the United States intends to join the diplomatic process led by the European Three (the United Kingdom, France and Germany) as a “full partner” and to speak with Iran on the basis of mutual respect, “We are also laying the groundwork for the kind of very tough sanctions, I think you said crippling sanctions, that might be necessary in the event that our offers are either rejected or the process is inconclusive or unsuccessful.”

Clinton’s language is strong, appropriately so in ISIS’s view, and clearly intended to communicate U.S. resolve that Iran not become another de facto nuclear weapon state in the region.  She also took aim at the Bush Administration, noting correctly that under President Bush’s leadership, Iran was not deterred at all from its current course.
